Sleeping Beauty

Dear Don Felisberto:

For a few weeks now I’ve seen your wife go by the window of the beauty parlor where I work as manicure girl. The beauty parlor is at basement level, in front of the service elevators that take you up to a dumpy hotel the back way. Every afternoon your wife takes this elevator, and rides up to one of the hotel rooms. I can see you turning the envelope around to see if it has a return address, but you won’t find any. You’ll never guess who I am; this city is full of fleabag hotels with beauty parlors on the lower level. She always wears dark glasses and covers her head with a kerchief, but even so I recognized her easily from the papers. I’ve always admired her so: being a ballerina and at the same time the wife of a business tycoon is no mean achievement.

If you still care for her, I suggest you find out why she comes here every day. I can assure you that by doing so, she’s risking her reputation needlessly. A lady’s reputation is like a polished mirror; it will smudge at the lightest touch. A lady mustn’t simply be respectable, she must, above all, appear to be so.

She folds the letter and puts it in an envelope. Using her left hand she scrawls the address on it with the same pencil she used to write the letter. She stretches before the mirror and stands up on her toes. She walks up to the bar and starts her daily routine.
